Mike and Jan wanted a complete change to their 1950s built chalet bungalow in Broadstone, Poole. Mike is retired and Jan is a nurse, and now their children have left home they wanted to create more space with modern living, and provide a home for the kids to visit with the grandchildren.
Mike and Jan knew they wanted a change and asked us to come up with something that was more modern. They didn't want a style that was too contemporary, and they wanted the final look to give a warm and homely feel. The investment they wanted to make was enough to extend and completely renovate the existing property. They required 2 additional bedrooms, an en-suite, and provide additional reception rooms on the ground floor.
Mike and Jan's budget provided us the opportunity to relcoate existing rooms and focus on improving the layout, in conjunction with adding space by extending the existing property. The neighbouring properties had previously undergone extensive enlargement and we were confident about adding a full two storey side extension which would become the primary element of the new house. The new extension provided a garage, utility rooom and formal dining room on the ground floor, with 2 additional bedrooms and a family bathroom on the first floor. A new single storey extension to the rear of the property provided a new open plan kitchen/family room, and a summer living room connected to the new kitchen. In the existing house, we created a vaulted ceiling for a gallery staircase and landing with new double doors through to the existing living room. We created a small study accessed off the living room, and added a downstairs WC accessed from the entrance hall. An exisiting bedroom was extended to provide the new master bedroom with walk through wordrobe into a raised en suite area.
The design features comprised of a juliet balcony to the new front bedroom, two storey glazing to the entrance hall, and 4m folding sliding doors to the kitchen/familty room opening onto the rear garden.
Planning was granted, and we were appointed to project manage the works. We are currently plastering the entire house, and finishing the exterior. The house is due to be handed over to Mike and Jan in mid October.
