Branksome Hill Road

Neil and Kate purchased their property and quickly realised that the accommodation and layout had limitations. They considered the option of moving, but felt that the location and site could provide an ideal long term home to start a family.

The requirements we were given mainly focused on the internal accommodation, and the external look was left open for us to explore. Kate and Neil both wanted open plan living for entertaining and family socialising. They both agreed on the requirement of 3 guest bedrooms, with a luxurious master bedroom and en suite.

The existing house had a wide frontage, but very shallow depth, and our proposals were to almost double the footprint of the existing house. This was a brave move but the size of the plot and relationship with the existing properties provided this opportunity, with no concern from the planning department about overdevelopment. We also proposed to provide a first floor terrace to the master bedroom which was met with no concerns, due to the clever use of roof overhangs to restrict overlooking. The existing rear elevation was flat and uninspiring with very few windows. We wanted to open the back of the house right up to take advantage of a wooded aspect to the rear. We focused the new works on the back of the house and created a new style for the rear of the property.

The end result created a large open plan kitchen, living, dining area with folding sliding doors opening onto a raised terrace. The new rear elevation presents twin roof gables, offset from one another, in a new england style finish consisting of white painted weatherboarding and timber balcony guarding. The inset terrace full width terrace serves the master bedroom with folding sliding doors a vaulted roof, and an overhanging roof.

The final design met all of Neil and Kate's requirements ind increased the footprint from 110mē to 195mē. Shortly after completion in July 2007 the project was featured in a 5 page article in Dorset magazine.
