Chine Walk

Jon and Rachel appointed Ah.Design after interviewing a selection of local architects during the purchase of a chalet bungalow in Ferndown, Dorset. From the very first meeting Jon and Rachel made it clear that the purchase of this property was to provide a long term home for their growing family.

Jon was very keen to acheive a very individual design statement to the rear, and the challenge was to acheive this without compromising to much on budget, and the functionality of the internal accomodation. The property is in a typical suburban location, and we knew that the modernisation would also have to compliment the existing surrounding properties so that planning permission could be achieved. Internally Jon and Rachel wanted to achieve modern family accomodation, that provided them with a home that could grow and adapt with them over a long period of time. They also wanted to connect the internal living spaces with the woodlond garden, which the current bungalow turns its back on. There were also budget constraints which meant that the existing bungalow had to retained, and the balance of good design, functionality needed to be delivered in a cost effective manner.

After analysing the constraints and opportunities of the site and the existing building, we created an ultra modern rear elevation combining a curved roof, full height glazed facade, and a floating copper clad box at first floor level. The curved roof allows the rear extension to remain hidden from the public highway for planning reasons, and presents a soft edge reducing the impact of bulk and mass on the neighbouring property. The front has been modernised with a 1970's feel to fit in with the local context and charater of the area.

The design meets Jon and Rachel's brief and provides large open living spaces, feature gallery landing and staircase, master bedroom with ensuite and dressing room with a further 3 double bedrooms. Planning was granted in August and work has begun on the working drawings. Work on site is planned early next year and we will provide updates as the construction proceeds.
